Can They Have It? — Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 12, 2026
Can They Have It? is a pet food reference and care-tracking app for iPhone and iPad developed by McKittrick LLC, doing business as McKittrick Studios. Starting with version 2.2, the app has no accounts, advertising, analytics, or tracking, and we do not receive your pets’ records. This policy explains information kept on your device separately from the online lookups you choose to use, Apple services, Apple purchases, support email, and this website.
Your pets’ records
Pet profiles, photos, medications and dose history, sensitivities, symptoms, medical records, appointments, care tasks, and caregiver and contact details you enter are stored on your device using Apple’s storage frameworks. They are not sent to a McKittrick-hosted database, and the app does not automatically sync them through iCloud. Whether they are included in a device backup depends on your Apple settings; this policy does not guarantee backup or recovery.
If your records cannot be opened, contact support before deleting or reinstalling the app. Deleting a pet or record in the app does not delete copies you previously exported, shared, or saved elsewhere.
Food checks, label scans, and barcodes
Food, plant, and household-item checks use a catalog built into the app and work offline, including answers given through Siri and Shortcuts. When you photograph an ingredient label, the text is recognized on your device with Apple’s Vision framework, and you can review it before checking. The photo is not uploaded, and the app does not send your questions or photos to an AI service.
Barcode lookup is the one check that goes online. The app sends only the barcode number to Open Food Facts and, if the product is not found there, Open Pet Food Facts to retrieve the product’s ingredient list. Nothing about you or your pets is included, though, as with any internet request, those services receive standard connection information such as your IP address. The ingredients are then checked against the app’s own catalog.
Find a Vet and location
Find a Vet asks for location access while you use it. With your permission, the app uses your approximate location to search Apple Maps for nearby veterinarians and emergency clinics. Apple processes that search under Apple’s privacy policy; the app does not send your location to us or save it. Calling a clinic or poison-control line, or opening directions, hands off to your phone or Apple Maps.
Reminders, camera, and photos
Medication and appointment reminders are scheduled on your device through Apple’s notification system after you allow notifications. Camera, Photos, location, and notification access depend on the features you use and your device settings.
Backups you export
Export creates an unencrypted backup file containing every pet and its history, including photos and health records; anyone with that file can read it. Import adds pets that are not already on the device, never overwrites or deletes existing pets, and never sends the file to us. You control the destination, recipients, and protection of files you export or share with other apps.
Caregiver sharing
Creating new caregiver invitations is not available in the current version. If a caregiver share exists, it holds an emergency subset of a pet’s profile (name, species, breed, weight, health notes, vet and emergency contacts, and allergy and active-medication names) in Apple’s CloudKit through your iCloud account, rather than on a McKittrick-hosted server. You can revoke an existing share in the app. Deleting a local pet does not revoke a share, and revoking a share does not erase a copy a recipient already saved. Contact support if you need help with an existing share. If caregiver sharing becomes available, this policy will be updated.
Purchases through Apple
Can They Have It? Pro is an optional one-time purchase. Apple handles App Store payments and purchase restoration. The app uses Apple’s StoreKit purchase information to determine your Pro access, including an earlier Remove Ads purchase or an active Plus subscription, and remembers the result on your device. We do not receive your payment card details through the app. Apple handles its account, billing, and payment information under Apple’s privacy policy.
No advertising, analytics, or tracking
Starting with version 2.2, the iOS app does not include advertising, third-party analytics, or tracking SDKs, and we do not collect data from the app. Barcode lookup and Find a Vet, described above, are the app’s online features. This statement is about the app, not this website or Apple services. If those app integrations change, this policy will be updated.
Earlier versions
Versions before 2.2 displayed ads using Google Mobile Ads and Google’s User Messaging Platform for advertising consent. Those services could process information such as device identifiers, approximate location, diagnostics, and ad interactions under Google’s privacy policy. Updating to the current version removes these services.
Older versions and other clients of the Can They Have It? online checker send the food and animal you ask about to our hosting and database providers. Do not put personal information in a food query.
Children
The app is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us so we can address it.
Support and information you send us
If you email support, we and the email services handling your message receive your email address, message, and any attachments you choose to send. We use that information to respond and troubleshoot. For questions or requests about support information you sent us, contact privacy@mckittrick.co. Support email is separate from the records on your device.
This website
The McKittrick Studios website is hosted on Vercel and uses Vercel Web Analytics and Speed Insights to measure website visits and performance. Website requests and measurement can involve the page visited, referring site, browser or device information, and performance measurements. This website measurement is separate from the app and your pets’ records.
See Vercel Web Analytics privacy information and Vercel’s privacy policy for hosting and measurement practices. Reference links in the app and on this website open third-party services with their own privacy practices.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new date.
